What Will Matter
By Michael Josephson
Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear.
So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won’t matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.
It won’t matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.
So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?
What will matter is not what you bought but what you built,
not what you got but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched,
empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew,
but how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone.
What will matter is not your memories but the memories of those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.

That is really a beautiful, thought provoking post. I think these words mean so much to me due to the fact that Mother's hospice chaplain was murdered just 8 short weeks after he led mother's funeral. He was a young, strong man with a wife and 3 young teens. It really reminds us that we need to be ready and how important it is to live for Jesus daily - minute by minute. Thanks Virginia for sharing this today. God bless, Mildred
Thank you for stopping by my blog, so that I was drawn to yours. It is so great to see God using many people to minister His love online. Blessings to you. Carolyn
Dear Virginia, I had to smile when I read the comment you left on my blog.... "Meanwhile I spent time at the beach dreaming about having a garden as beautiful as yours……"... and here I am, for over 20 years now dreaming about Florida, and the day I'd move there.... ha! It had never happened... Life is too complicated isn't it, we humans are always desiring and wanting that what we don't have... one day, like you said in this wonderful post, we will have a perfect life, a life lived in peace and perfect harmony by our Saviour... what a wonderful day that will be!
Blessings to you dear one

I've been meaning to look up this poem all week that you mentioned on a comment to my blog post last week. And today I find it when I visit your blog again! Divine providence. It is wonderful and I appreciate you typing it up for us here.
